Talk:Pacifigorgia engelmanni
Latest comment: 4 years ago by Christian Ferrer
- Potential issue: on 2019/09/10 WoRMS (and the other online databases) states that
- 1/ the name is Pacifigorgia englemanni
- 2/ the original combination is Gorgonia englemanni
The 3 only publications made by Horn in 1860 are all available in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia of 1860.
see Calvert P.P. 1898. A biographical Notice of Georges Henri Horn. 1-24 PDF
The first of the three papers is:
- Horn, G.H. 1860. Descriptions of three new species of Gorgonidae, in the collection of the academy. Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. 12: 233 BHL Reference page.
- One of species described is Rhipidigorgia engelmanni with at the end of the description the text "Locality. Mazatlan. Dr. Engelmann.". It is clear that the species is nommed after Dr. Engelmann
- Note that in the other 1860's publications made by Horn, no other names than the quoted name above that are close to "englemanni" or "engelmanni" are available.
Possible conclusion?
- 1/ the paper quoted above is the original publication
- 2/ the current name should be Pacifigorgia engelmanni
- 2/ the stated original combination should be: Rhipidigorgia engelmanni

- I made a search and find:
- Rhipidigorgia engelmanni Horn, 1960: 233 [original combination]
- Gorgonia "engelmanni" — Bielschowsky, 1918: 32 [subsequent combination] (I don't have acess to full paper to check the spelling and if combination is directly or by implication, the next possibility for the first use of that combination is Gorgonia stenobrochis englemanni [sic] Kükenthal, 1919: 773, reduced as subspecies, which i don't have access either to check)
- Pacifigorgia englemanni [sic] — Breedy & Gúzman, 2002: 816 [subsequent combination]
Checking original description "engelmmani" is the correct spelling, and "englemanni" is a incorrect subsequent spelling (ISS); and the original combination is Rhipidigorgia engelmanni (as R. Engelmanni) and not Gorgonia englemanni, that is a subsequent combination made by Bielschowsky or Kükenthal. Burmeister (talk) 00:41, 11 September 2019 (UTC)
- Good news, that have been fixed in WoRMS. Thanks you Bert! I will redirect that page soon, will fix the wikidata item, and I will contact GBIF and a few others too. Christian Ferrer (talk) 17:27, 13 September 2019 (UTC)
