Placed in a separate family, Callimiconidae, by Hershkovitz (1977), but recognized as a member of the Callitrichidae (=Hapalidae) by Pocock (1920a), Napier (1976), and Groves (1989); McKenna and Bell (1997) placed it in a separate subfamily, Callimiconinae, of their family Callitrichidae.
