Subfamily and Generic Circumscriptions
editThe subfamily circumscription follows the accepted Nyffeler & Eggli (2010). However, there is still considerable debate as to tribal and generic circumscriptions and the genus list follows a conservative approach based upon Hunt (2006) and so there will be difference in tribes and subtribes. Given that there has been attempts at generic splitting, for example see Echinopsis (Trichocereinae), for which there is an alternate lumping approach - see reference list for the subtribe. The excessive splitting in the whole family is now seen to have gone too far - see Hernández-Ledesma et al. (2015) for a synopsis. Consensus has not yet been achieved unfortunately, but changes are anticipated. Andyboorman (talk) 16:33, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
- Circumscription is beginning to settle into consensus and are being incorporated now they have become generally available. However, Cactoideae is still somewhat a work in progress. A developing resource at Cactaceae at Caryophyllales.org is a great help, if a bit difficult to use at the moment. In addition it is planned to remove artificial hybrids as these are out of scope. Finally, the presence of natural hybrids and hybrid swarms mainly through allopolyploidy is inevitably causing taxonomists problems. Andyboorman (talk) 08:29, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
