Sphaerellothecium aerophilum


Substratum: Lichenicolous fungus (parasite on living lichens)

Diagnosis: Fungus lichenicola parasymbioticus. Mycelium e hyphiis aeriis, saepe ramosis, raro anastomosantibus, raro cum matrice conjunctis compositum. Ascomata aeria, circiter 75 µm. Hamathecium deest. Asci late ellipsoides, I-, quatrospori. Ascosporae uniseptatae, ellipsoides, fuscae, 27-32 x 7-9 µm.

Type: CANADA. British Columbia. Vancouver Island, Bamfield Marine Station, on epiphytic Alectoria sarmentosa, Aug. 30 1994, Alstrup C2120 (holotype, MIN; isotype, C)

Etymology: Specific epithet refers to the completely free ascomata and free mycelium.
