Type collection: MISSOURI. Crawford Co., Onondaga Cave State Park, Vilander Bluff, on Juniperus virginiana; NW1/4 NWi/4 Sec. 15 T39N R2W; Ladd & Wilhelm 15879, 22 Dec 1991 (Holotype: MOR; Isotypes: COLO, BAFC, F, IMI, LSU, MICH, NY, O, OMA, US).
Note: Punctelia missouriensis was considered by Adler (1997) to be conspecific with Punctelia punctilla; however a study by Aptroot (2003) showed P. missouriensis to be a distinct species. (Source: Hinds and Hinds, 2007)
