- Type locality: Gasöyane Islands, Spitsbergen.
- Holotype: J. Elster; 2014-08-25; on baslat rock just above tidal zone; the locality is a protected bird-nesting site, nitrogen-enriched by bird guano. GALW 15826. Isotype specimens: BM and US. rbcL sequence of holotype specimen: LN877817.
- Eponymy: named in honor of Wendy Guiry, curator of AlgaeBase.
