Diagnosis: Thallus foliaceus, usque ad 8 cm diametro, superne griseus vel fuscus et plus minusve pruinosus; sorediis isidiisque destitutus; subtus ater, rhizinis squarroso-ramosus. Differta Physconia distorta stratum corticale superiorus paraplectenchymatum.
Type: U.S.A. Idaho. Kootenai Co.: near the south end of Lower Twin Lake; Douglas fir forest at ca. 760 m elev., on creekside cottonwood near road, 3 July 1990, Esslinger 11344 (DUKE, holotype; GZ, herb. Essl., isotypes).
Distribution: On bark or rock; presently known from Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and California, but probably somewhat more widely distributed in western North America.
World distribution: Western North America, southern Europe and northern Africa, Asia
