Note: Although Benson (1982) used this name to refer to southeastern United States plants, the original description and neotype are ambiguous. It is clearly not a taxon from the southeastern United States and may be a South American plant. Opuntia drummondii Graham in Maund, Botanist 5: pl. 246. (1846) is preferred for the southeastern United States species (Majure, 2021).
