Ridsdale (1989: 200) placed Neonauclea peduncularis (Wall. ex G.Don) Merr., whose basionym Nauclea peduncularis Wall. ex G.Don had been first described from Peninsular Malaysia (Penang), under N. calycina, but it appears under Neonauclea excelsa (Blume) Merr. in Wong et al. (2019: 210).

IUCN Red List (assessed on 12 June 2018) also includes Assam (Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura) sensu Brummitt (2001), Java and Peninsular Malaysia in native range. According to Seah & Wong (14 December 2018), specimens from Java, Peninsular Malaysia and some parts of Borneo previously determined as this species belong to Neonauclea excelsa (Blume) Merr.
