- Type species: Mesosphaerum suaveolens (L.) Kuntze, Revis. Gen. Pl. 2: 525 (1891)
The genus was once a synonym of Hyptis, but has been resurrected using the above species, in order to accommodate the re-circumscription of Hyptidinae (Harley & Pastore, 2012).
