Typus: A.C. Maingay [1803] (Malacca [= Melaka], [Malaysia]; [5 March 1867]; Holotypus: K [cf. K000695560^{(GBIF, JSTOR)}, 'Type', also numbered "1428?"]; Isotypus: L 0015817^{(GBIF, JSTOR)} [numbered "1428"]).

Kochummen (1989) places Melanochyla densiflora King under M. tomentosa, but see the other sources who disagree with this older citation.
