Summary

Description

Protolepidodendron sp. - fossil plant from the Devonian of New York State, USA. (public display, Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, Illinois, USA)

Lycopods are one of the best known plant groups in the fossil record. They occur as relatively small, herbaceous forms and as large, arborescent forms (= scale trees, up to ~40 meters tall). The herbaceous lycopods first appear in the Devonian. During the Carboniferous, arborescent lycopods were the dominant terrestrial plants on Earth. The protolepidodendraleans are an extinct group of herbaceous lycopods known only from the Devonian and Mississippian. Their leaves ("microphylls") had bifurcate tips, unlike other lycopods. Well known protolepidodendraleans include Protolepidodendron itself (seen here) and Leclercquia.

Classification: Plantae, Lycophyta, Protolepidodendrales

Stratigraphy: unrecorded/undisclosed Devonian-aged unit

Locality: unrecorded/undisclosed site in New York State, USA
