Summary

Description Native warm-season perennial tufted wiry C4 grass with a knotty rootstock; stems are hairless to shortly-hairy, erect or have a slight knee-bend near their base and grow to 80 cm tall. Flowerheads are a primary axis of racemes 4-10 cm long consisting of short erect branches pressed against the main stem; branches end in a small bristle. Spikelets are 2-flowered, 2-2.75 mm long and appear constricted towards their base; fertile lemma is finely ridged. Flowers in summer. Found on shallow rocky hillslopes and light sandy soils in well-drained areas. Most common in the north; mostly restricted to the Plains and western margins of the Slopes south of Dubbo. Native biodiversity. Although palatable, it is of minimal importance to livestock as it generally occurs as sparsely distributed small tufts in grazed areas and is low yielding. Declines under livestock grazing.
