Description Dr. Isabella Aiona Abbott, an accomplished marine researcher, who became the world’s leading expert on Hawaiian seaweeds. The first Native Hawaiian woman to earn a doctorate in the field of science, she was a lecturer at Stanford, became the first woman on Stanford’s biological science faculty, won many awards, authored hundreds of books and research papers, and was credited with discovering over 200 species of algae.
