Everything is made of ironexcepting the doors, windows, and flooring, and thewalls are composed of plates of sheet-iron. In both cases the soil was probablyof recent volcanic origin. The forest became more and more open as I ascended;the tree-ferns were more and more numerous, and afterpassing a few shrubs of Mimulofsis Violacea in fullflower (vide coloured illus.), I was soon in the prairie.I traversed a narrow belt of tall elephant grass, andthen, at an elevation of 3600 feet, there came into viewthe most beautiful lands
