Summary
DescriptionMicranthes virginiensis, flower. C & O Canal Park, Montgomery co., MD. (3-10-12) (8547671434).jpg
Last year I found this species flowering in late March, and the stems were several inches tall. These early ones seems to be playing it safe by staying close to the ground. They were growing in relatively dry appearing soil, in an unusually warm microclimate on a southfacing river embankment surrounded with protective rocks.
Recent genetic evidence has demonstrated that certain members of the Saxifragaceae family that have traditionally been categorized as members of the Saxifraga genus, including Saxifraga virginiensis, should be divided out into their own genus, Micranthes. The new name has not caught on widely yet, but the reasons for the change seem relatively uncontroversial.
