Summary

Description

Mesohippus bairdi Leidy, 1850 - fossil horse skeleton from the Oligocene of Nebraska, USA. (CM 961, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA)

From museum signage: "About the size of a greyhound dog, Mesohippus was larger than its wee ancestor, the dawn horse. This horse had pads, as well as hooves, on its three-toed feet, and was a common animal in North America 30 million years ago.

As forests gave way to more open country, horses were no longer confined to scampering among the undergrowth. Mesohippus’ small size would have made it easy prey on the wide open plains. It developed the ability to hide and flee from predators. "

Classification: Animalia, Chordata, Vertebrata, Mammalia, Perissodactyla, Equidae

Locality: Badland Creek, Sioux County, northwestern Nebraska, USA
