DescriptionJ20170428-0076—Pipevine Swallowtail nectaring on Salvia chionopeplica—RPBG—DxO (34393243996).jpg
Pipevine swallowtails (Battus philenor) are flitting all around the garden laying their eggs on California pipevine (Aristolochia californica) and nectaring on many of the myriad flowers available. The swallowtails seem particularly attracted to Baja sage (Salvia chionopeplica) from the western slopes of Sierra de San Pedro Mártir in Baja California. A friend who has studied the symbiosis between pipevine and butterfly tells me the butterfly is a male. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
