English: Fisherites reticulatus (Owen, 1844) - partial specimen of fossil calcareous algae in limestone from the Ordovician of Missouri, USA. (Rich Fuchs collection)
This species is also known as Receptactulites reticulatus. Receptaculitids are an extinct group of shallow-water marine organisms that have been reported from most of the Paleozoic (Ordovician to Permian). They have a calcareous skeleton with a broadly inflated discoidal shape having a sunflower-like pattern. The taxonomic affiliations of receptaculitides are uncertain. These fossils have been referred to as sponges or algae. Modern researchers seem to agree that receptaculitids are calcareous algae. More specific taxonomic assignments remain controversial.
