Syntypes:
- J.J. Linden 399 (August [1842]; P ['lectotype' fide Diazgranados 2012; P04086194^(GBIF), annotated as 'Lecto-holotypus' by J. Cuatrecasas in 1986]; Isosyntype: P [P02441522^{(CRIA, GBIF, JSTOR)}, only leaves; inflorescences are of E. semiglobulata Cuatrec.])
  - Note: as pointed in Tropicos, the lectotypification Diazgranados presented lacks reference in which it had been made; as Weddell (1856: 63) and Cuatrecasas (2013: 579) noticed, labelling on Linden collections had experienced some confusion, so Linden 368 (P [P04086193^(GBIF)]) and Linden 398 (F [fide Smith & Koch 1935], G [fide Smith & Koch 1935], P [P02441483^{(CRIA, GBIF, JSTOR)}, leaves only; inflorescences are of E. semiglobulata], US [US00516669 (1473203)^{(GBIF, JSTOR, speciesLink)}]) could be considered as isosyntypes, if Cuatrecasas' suggestion is correct.

Type locality: Venezuela. Sierra Nevada de Merida, h. 4200–4500 m.
