Type: U.S.A. Pennsylvania, Muhlenberg 142 (isotype, PH!)

Distribution and ecology: In the Ozarks D. muhlenbergii is widespread on calcareous rock but may also occur on acidic rock. Dermatocarpon muhlenbergii grows in a wide variety of habitats from xeric to semi-aquatic and in shaded areas such as under ledges to highly exposed bluff faces.
