• Type locality: Landlocked pond locality: Walsingham Pond, Hamilton Parish, Bermuda Islands, western Atlantic; On rock in shaded underhang, subtidal.
• Holotype: CWS/CEL 03-16-6, male: 2003-03-31. MICH (no acc. number). Isotypes: MSM, NY, US.

• Eponymy: Named for Gary W. Saunders, Canadian phycologist and molecular phylogeneticist.
