Ceramium virgatum Roth, 1797

  • Type locality: South Harbour, Helgoland, North Sea.
  • Epitype: Fig. 2 (of sample number 496), 7 January 1999; very sheltered; ELWST, on wall, epiphytic on various algae. BM (designated by Maggs, Ward, McIvor, Evans, Rueness & Stanhope 2002: 412, 413, 410).
  • Note: Roth's (1797) figure (pl. 8, fig.1) is based on a specimen collected at Eckwarden, likely obtained from drift, as there is no naturally occurring solid substratum at this site. Samples from the lower intertidal zone of the nearby rocky island of Helgoland resemble Roth's illustration.
