A traditional order of subfamilies might be
- Tyranninae: Myiarchus, Myiodynastes, Pitangus, Tyrannus
- Tityrinae: Pachyramphus, Tityra, Xenopsaris
- Fluvicolinae: Contopus, Empidonax, Pyrocephalus, Sayornis
- Elaeniinae: the rest, divided into tribes (Elaeniini, Platyrinchini, ...)
However the findings of Chesser (2004) imply that the taxonomy of the Tyrannidae is in need of thorough review, so this breakdown is not at present reflected here.
