This genus was separated from Bunopithecus by Mootnick and Groves (2005), as Bunopithecus sericus is outside the modern gibbon clade and the Hoolock gibbons do not belong to the same genus (Groves, 2001c); this was the reason why Groves (2001c) did not take the step of elevating the subgenera of Hylobates to generic rank.
