This species was incorrectly synonymyzed under D. elongata var. carinata by Weise (1893) and removed from synonymy with D. elongata by Berti and Rapilly (1973). Tracy and Robbins (2009) provide keys to separate D. carinulata from four sibling species of the Diorhabda elongata species group.
Yu et al. (1996) proposed the species D. deserticola.
