Native, warm-season, perennial, herb. Stems are erect, 10-40 cm tall and rough to touch; they arise from underground stolons.
Found in moist areas, such as around swamps, creeks and drainage lines; also in grasslands and woodlands. The red on this plant is a virus attacking the new growth.
