Heads are mostly axillary, solitary or paired, unstalked to shortly stalked and usually reddish-purple. Outer florets are very numerous, female, filiform, 2-3-toothed and without ligules. Inner florets are fewer, bisexual, sterile or functionally male, tubular, 4-5-toothed and exceed the female florets.
