IPNI standard form

{{Editprotected}}

Please add a new message to allow better translation of {{IPNI standard form}}:

  • English content: IPNI standard form
  • French translation: forme standard IPNI

Once this is added, the template can be changed to {{int:IPNI standard form}}: <span style="font-weight:bold">{{{1|{{#property:P428}}}}}</span> instead of its current switch statement.

MediaWiki:References/ru

Please correct the translation in MediaWiki:References/ru. References is more correctly translated into Russian as Источники, and not Литература (Literature). HFoxii (talk) 12:08, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Localization of the Japanese language

Please translate the Japanese words and phrases below:

Please localize Japanese. We have referred to the following documents.

By the way, are there any plans to make the classification class a target for localization? --(kageyuki)影佑樹 (talk) 14:44, 11 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Following on from the previous user's comment, if there is a plan to display the taxonomic ranks in Japanese, this is a useful source following McKenna & Bell, with seventeen ranks from Class to Parvorder: [1], Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 08:31, 5 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Also, MediaWiki:Vernacular names/ja is currently showing 属名 (the equivalent of "genus name"), and should be amended to 通俗名, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 08:39, 5 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

If the lists don't exist already, might it be possible to have similar localization for "and" and "or"? also, to have a complete set in Latin? (if so, I could see if someone over on Latin wikipedia could help translate/check), thank you, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 01:17, 16 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Maculosae tegmine lyncis: I've added the Japanese translations per your latest list above. A complete set of Latin sounds good – only, I don't have one... If you feel up to it, please post a list with the appropriate Latin words and phrases here on this page, and I will gladly add them to the localization database. However for the sake of clarity and legibility, please post them in a new thread on this page, since this thread regards Japanese localizations only. I'll add "and", "or" and other such linguistic morsels at the same time as I enter the Latin set. Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 04:41, 16 June 2021 (UTC).Reply
Thank you, and the rest (I don't know if ?mouseovers? might be useful for the taxonomic ranks etc), Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 14:03, 16 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
The rest:
As at Isao Ijima, the {taxa authored} template seems to add (1) the heading "Taxon names authored" and (2) the line "[n] taxon names authored by Isao Ijima"; for the first, (v0.1) "作成させた分類群名", for the second, "[Isao Ijima]に作成された分類群名". Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 12:41, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
In terms of applying {int:ornithologist} etc to the first line of the authority pages, is that something that can be semi-automated? Also, how about the countries/nationalities {int:Japan|Japanese} (日本の), regional subdivisions, institutions etc; perhaps the name itself 飯島魁; Would we want someone to provide the translations/transliterations manually, for each language, or can we somehow use Wikidata? Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 12:41, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Also, (Template:Extinct) displays "Extinct" when you hover over it; I don't know how to, but is it possible that could be localized too - 絶滅, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 20:10, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
On the contrary: in fact, we should never use it! Instead we should only add the symbol "as is", i.e. simply add † just as any other letter or symbol (%, &, etc) and not use a template for it. The same goes for ♂ and ♀ which we should also use as "plain text" symbols. I know that the {{Extinct}}, {{Male}} and {{Female}} templates are available, but we only keep them for interwiki compatibility reasons. It's not common, but sometimes we import data from other Wikimedia projects that may include those templates, hence we have copies of them here as well in order to not break the imported code. Sadly I don't think any of this is documented in the WS manuals or help files. it's only consensus and praxis. Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 01:17, 18 June 2021 (UTC).Reply
Thank you for explaining; here's "or", Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 16:07, 18 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
FYI and as a side note, I've now created help documentation for the {{Extinct}} template saying that it's recommended not to use it. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 00:25, 21 June 2021 (UTC).Reply

Recent additions, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 13:26, 22 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello, please could you make the following two changes (added to, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 06:32, 24 June 2021 (UTC)):Reply
Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 00:37, 9 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Also, "Name" appears under the "taxon pages", "author pages", "repository pages", and "publication pages" headings; ideally it would be translated differently - Panthera leo would be 学名 "scientific name", while "Elsa" would be 名前 "(her own) name"; on author pages, the current 名前 works well for the (taxon authority) name; for the repository, 名称 "title" or "formal appellation" would be good (this can also be used for a taxon name, instead of 学名 "scientific name"); I don't known how "Name" is being used on the publication pages; if it is not possible to differentiate, then the current 名前 is probably best, unless no use is made of "Name" on the author and publication pages, in which case 名称 might be better; thank you.., Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 15:30, 23 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Maculosae tegmine lyncis: no, all instances on the "Wikispecies:Localization" page that share the same title are in fact identical: they all refer to the same item in the database, but reappear in the different tables on the Wikispecies:Localization page. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 16:16, 23 June 2021 (UTC).Reply
@Maculosae tegmine lyncis: In theory it's possible to split the "Name" item into for example "Name (author)", "Name (publication)" and "Name (taxon)". However, that would be very inconvenient since we would have to manually edit every single instance where the word "Name" is used on the site, i.e. more or less every page in Wikispecies... :-) Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 17:04, 23 June 2021 (UTC).Reply
In which case, perhaps leave it as it is then, with the general term, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 17:25, 23 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Also, as in the user talk page discussion here, is there any possibility of/scope for slightly "deeper" localization, so that, in the context of "...taxon names authored by...", rather than - "[n] <localization>taxon names authored by</localization> [taxonomist]" - the order can be changed in eg the Japanese context to "[taxonomist] <localization part one> [n] <localization part two>"? Thank you, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 06:32, 24 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
