Template talk:Authority control

Styling edit

 Resolved.

This template looks rough; the relevant hlist styling needs to be imported from, say, en.Wikipedia. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:04, 21 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Wikidata links enabled edit

Work has begun on Wikidata integration; stage one enables "interwiki" links. Here's the announcement.

I have done this for Joseph-Étienne Giraud, for example; see the corresponding item, wikidata:Q6280725.

This probably renders the |Wikidata= parameter of this template redundant - but it should not be removed until a bot (or a crowd of humans) has made the Wikidata links.

The parameter is also still needed for user pages. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:04, 21 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Possible additions edit

I'm thinking of several identifiers that could be added: ResearchGate person ID (P2038), Google Scholar ID (P1960), and possibly IPNI author ID (P586) and ZooBank author ID (P2006). Korg (talk) 01:17, 21 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

I've added links to the following identifiers: IPNI author ID (P586), ZooBank author ID (P2006), Google Scholar ID (P1960), Scopus Author ID (P1153) and ResearchGate person ID (P2038) (diff). Korg (talk) 16:17, 5 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Other possible additions: BHL creator ID (P4081), Entomologists of the World ID (P5370). Korg (talk) 18:13, 28 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
I support adding P4081 & P5370. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:54, 5 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
Added P4081 & P5370 (diff). For P4081, the word "author" (or "creator"?) could be in the link ("Biodiversity Heritage Library author" vs. Biodiversity Heritage Library author). For P5370, I'm not sure what name should be displayed ("Biographies of the Entomologists of the World" seemed a little bit long). Korg (talk) 21:52, 7 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
As far as publications go, would it be possible to add SUDOC editions (P1025) and ZDB ID (P1042)? These two sites give useful information about publication history, and are helpful when trying to sort out journals which have undergone name changes.--Keith Edkins (Talk) 10:40, 31 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

The SBN id <number> is not valid edit

This kind of error currently pops up on 358 taxon author pages, e.g. Giovanni Antonio Scopoli. It looks like the format for SBN (now ICCU?) has been changed recently or something, going by Wikidata:Property talk:P396. Also compare en:Module:Authority control's handling of ICCU links. @Monster Iestyn: Do you know for approximately how long this has been a problem? –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 16:03, 22 February 2022 (UTC).Reply
@Tommy Kronkvist No idea unfortunately, I first noticed the error the day I reported it here. Monster Iestyn (talk) 16:06, 22 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Okay, thanks. I'll look in to it, but it may take a couple of days 'cause there's a lot on my plate at the moment. :-) Tommy Kronkvist (talk) 16:12, 22 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Koavf Hi, I take it you must have noticed the same error I mentioned above; however, you didn't get rid of it by deleting the createRow function, but instead introduced a different error which prevents the Authority control box from appearing at all. Monster Iestyn (talk) 01:18, 15 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
True and true! Thanks and sorry. —Justin (koavf)TCM 01:20, 15 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Pigsonthewing Can you do anything about the error mentioned above? Tommy Kronkvist said he'd look into it back in February, but I take it he hasn't had the time to do so. Thought I'd ask since seeing you edit the module just now reminded me of this. I linked one page before where the error pops up, but this category gives probably all the pages with the same error. Beyond my skill-set sadly. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:22, 15 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

───────────────── @Tommy Kronkvist Hi, were you going to look at this issue at some point soon? Because unfortunately the errors are still there... though if you're too busy to do anything still, I understand. That'll just mean I'll have to dust off my own knowledge of Lua and see if I can fix the problem myself. Monster Iestyn (talk) 13:14, 14 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello Monster Iestyn. I had totally forgot about this, so thank you for the reminder! I currently only have access to mobile devices, hence I'm in a rather bad position to do any "heavy lifting" in terms of coding. Even though I edit in "desktop mode" on my iPad it's not really the same as editing on a desktop computer. However I did have a quick look at the the SBN-related code in the module, and it's true that Wikispecies' Authority control module differs quite a lot from for example the equivalent Wikipedia module and the one at Wikisource. (Among other things the Wikispecies module calls local function sbnLink while Wikisource calls function sbnLink.)
Unfortunately I wont be able to be of much real help until I've sorted out the hardware situation here (i.e. buys a new computer: also, I'm currently waiting for Apple to release the model I want, which is said to happen sometime betweeen now and mid-December.) In the meantime I'm afraid you have to dust off the cobwebs of your own Lua skills, as you say. :-) I'm sure Justin (koavf) is able to help if he wants to and finds the time, but he's often very active/busy with projects at enWP and Commons, among other wikis. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 16:49, 14 November 2022 (UTC).Reply
Thanks. I'm not a super-whiz at this stuff, so I could either import a module from another project or try reverse engineering, but if Andy can't do it, I likely can't. @Monster Iestyn:, please advise. :/ —Justin (koavf)TCM 16:52, 14 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Tommy Kronkvist @Koavf I see, thanks for responding. Honestly, if I were to do this myself (which I've been looking into just earlier), I'd just copy+paste function p.iccuLink from en.wiki's version of the module does for ICCU (which apparently replaces SBN) and tweak it appropriately for Wikispecies' version. My main hang up is I'm not exactly sure how to test edits to Lua modules without trial-and-error yet, and in the end that might be the lazy solution. Monster Iestyn (talk) 17:03, 14 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Honestly I've been thinking for several years now to download the MediaWiki software together with the entire Wikispecies database and the Lua software and set up my own local "Wikispecies" server, just for testing. That's a bit of a mouthful though, and if you're running Windows you might want to check out Moonsharp and similar Lua(-ish) interpreters instead. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 17:52, 14 November 2022 (UTC).Reply
@Monster Iestyn: I am fine with being the person to copy/paste. If you want to put the literal text in User:Monster Iestyn/Sandbox or something, ping me and let me know. —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:27, 14 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Koavf: Fair enough, I just added to User:Monster Iestyn/Sandbox the code to replace and the code to replace it with (for two places in the module, mind). Monster Iestyn (talk) 18:58, 14 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Monster Iestyn: Done. Thoughts? —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:23, 14 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Koavf: No errors on Giovanni Antonio Scopoli anymore, the ICCU link works with no problems... I think it was a success. However I have not checked other pages where the error occurred yet (and I have lost track of the original list anyway). Monster Iestyn (talk) 19:32, 14 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
I like it! Thanks. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:32, 14 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Ah, found the list, it was here: Category:Wikipedia articles with faulty authority control identifiers (SBN) It looks like that's fixed all of them! Monster Iestyn (talk) 19:36, 14 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

──────────────────────   Resolved. Thanks, Monster Iestyn and Justin! Great team work, and quick too! –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 20:18, 14 November 2022 (UTC).Reply

Lattes Platform number edit

Hi, should Lattes Platform number (P1007) be added? I think it'd be very useful for reference at least for Brazilian taxon author pages, since it provides a CV and a list of publications. Monster Iestyn (talk) 20:07, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it would be useful. Korg (talk) 14:39, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

More space above the template? edit

The space above the template is small, see for example Charles Robert Darwin or Kazunori Yoshizawa. I have seen editors add one more line before it, in order to add more space; see for example Sheng-Feng Lin or W. Evan Braswell. Which style do you prefer? Shouldn't we add a larger margin at the top of the template, so there would be no need to add an extra line before it? Korg (talk) 15:19, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

On the English Wikipedia, there is slightly more space; see en:Louis Pierre Vieillot and Louis Pierre Vieillot. Korg (talk) 09:19, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

WorldCat Identities: removed edit

Clicking on a WorldCat Identities link led to a 404 page (e.g. WorldCat Identities in the Charles Robert Darwin page). See wikipedia:WorldCat: "Maintenance of WorldCat Identities was suspended and the service will be discontinued as it is being replaced by WorldCat Entities.", and wikidata:Property:P7859 (WorldCat Identities ID (superseded)): "former ID for a bibliographic page of an entity on WorldCat. Use P243 (OCLC control number) for books, and P10832 (WorldCat Entities ID) for authority control for people, places, and works". There is no longer a link to WorldCat Identities in w:Module:Authority control and w:Module:Authority control/config, so I removed it here too. Korg (talk) 16:30, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
