Nomenclatural notes edit

  • Otolelus was proposed as a new replacement name for Olotelus Mulsant & Rey, 1866, but remains unavailable according to Alonso-Zarazaga (2010)
  • again according to Alonso-Zarazaga (2010), Xylophilus pruinosus Kiesenwetter, 1861 is not the type species of Gompelia
  • ICZN Article 69.1.1. 'In the absence of a prior type fixation for a nominal genus or subgenus, an author is deemed to have designated one of the originally included nominal species as type species, if he or she states (for whatever reason, right or wrong) that it is the type or type species, or uses an equivalent term, and if it is clear that that author accepts it as the type species'
  • Nardi (2007: 25) stated that 'Xylophilus pruinosus is one of the four nominal species originally included in Olotelus Mulsant & Rey, 1866a, so Klinger's type species designation is valid (Article 67.2 and 67.8). This species has become also the type species of Olotelus Mulsant & Rey (Article 67.8)'
  • it is therefore clear that Nardi (2007: 25) accepted Xylophilus pruinosus Kiesenwetter, 1861 as the type species of Olotelus Mulsant & Rey, 1866, albeit for the wrong reasons
  • this threatens to make Gompelia Alonso-Zarazaga, 2010 a junior subjective synonym of Cobososia Collado & Alonso-Zarazaga, 1996
  • I am ignoring this complication, pending further clarification ...
