Summary

Description

Native warm-season perennial stout C4 grass; stems are erect, cane-like, sometimes branched, 100-200 cm tall and often arising from rhizomes. Flowerheads are subdigitate, with 6-20 racemes (branches). Spikelets are overlapping, 3-4.5 mm long and 3-8-flowered; lemmas are 1-2 mm long and hairy at their base. Flowers in summer after rain or flooding.

Found in moist areas and shallow ephemeral or permanent water such as swamp margins, watercourses and drains. More common on the Plains and western edge of the Slopes. Native biodiversity. May form localized clumps which harbour feral animals, but are also useful habitat for native animals. A very stemmy plant which is not regarded as useful for livestock; often only produces green material when standing in water; stems are very persistent. Sometimes regarded as a weed of irrigation channels.
