Dr. Ronald S. Tykoski, a "fossil preparator" at the Perot Museum of Nature and Sdcience in Dallas, Texas, leads an archaeological dig on the site of the discovery of a Columbian mammoth near Italy, Texas. (Gabriel J. Penn, postmaster in Waxahachie, 15 miles away, named the town in 1880 because, he said, its climate was much like that found in "sunny Italy.") Ranchers dredging sand from a large pit outside town discovered the nearly intact skeleton of the prehistoric mammoth, which lived some time between 20,000 and 40,000 years ago. They decided to donate the skeleton to the Perot Museum. The Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) was a species of mammoth of the Quaternary period that appeared in North America (in the present United States to as far south as Nicaragua and Honduras) during the late Pleistocene period. It is also called the Imperial mammoth.
