Summary

Description I believe that this is worthy of being noted as a whole new species. Molecular testing seems to advocate this, too, as this grove of "Santa Cruz Cypress" shows much difference at the genetic level from the other four known groves. Note the somewhat blue, glaucous nature of the foliage, not to mention the large cone size and the difference in morphology of these cones vs. cones of the major's creek, brackenbrae or bonny doon groves. These cones appear to almost have "warts", too, like Cupressus sargentii, while none of the other groves of abramsiana have cones with this feature. The form of the tree is noticeably different, as well, and seedlings from the Butano grove reportedly are growing much, much faster than seedlings of any of the other groves. Something very special is going on (has been going on, for thousands of years, most likely) at Butano Ridge.
