Name

Centromochlus (Centromochlus) existimatus Mees, 1974

• Holotype: ANSP 73154.
• Paratypes: ANSP 108489 (1); BMNH 1889.11.14.39 (1); CAS 6689 (1), 13399 [ex CAS 6676] (1), 13400 [= CAS 24799] (1); MCZ 7628-31 (2, 1, 5 6), 7635 (2), 7730 (7 + 23 or author error); MNRJ 9413 (2), 9415 (1); ZMUC (1).

Type locality: Harbor of Manos, Amazon River, Brazil.

Etymology: considered, allusion not explained, perhaps reflecting Mees’ statement: “I have considered the possibility that the differences between C. heckelii and C. existimatus are not specific but sexual, a possibility that appears to be strengthened by the fact that the two have so often been collected together (as evidenced by mixed samples in collection)”.
