Holotype: UNSM (University of Nebraska State Museum) 62877.
Type locality: Near the town of Orchard, Antelope County, Nebraska, in a 2 m thick bed of pure volcanic ash at the centre of NE quarter of NE quarter of NW quarter of Sec. 8, Township 28 N, range 7W. Cap Rock Member, Ash Hollow Formation, Late Clarendonian (early Late Miocene).
Etymology: Anchi from Greek meaning almost, plus gyps, vulture, in reference to its intermediate morphology between normal accipitrids and gypaetine Old World vultures. Species name is in honor of Michael R. Voorhies, who discovered the locality and led the excavations
