Deletion of Clarke, 2011

I need to go offline after a loong Wikimedia session online, but would like to make my fellow admins aware that we've lately had several spam pages created by what appears to be some kind of spambot. Please have a look at these accounts (listed alphabetically):

All of them were created yesterday or today, with the exception of "AldaHoskins" which was created October 27, 2019. None of them have made any edits until now. Together with Thiotrix I've blocked them all (one is also globally blocked) and deleted their edits, however new ones keep popping up every few hours or so. Perhaps we need to administer some sort of IP range block, but right know I'm too tired to wrap my head around such technicalities. :-) Anyway, please keep a vigilant eye out for new spam pages, and respond accordingly. The recent Block log and Deletion logs may also be useful.

Ever faithful, but currently signing off: Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 07:15, 15 January 2020 (UTC).[reply]

The User creation log is also informative. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 07:35, 15 January 2020 (UTC).[reply]
Thanks @Tommy Kronkvist:, you write they didnt make any edits, but you also wrote you deleted their edits, I cant see any edits, so I guess its the first. Why I ask, is casue this could be an occassion, where the spam filter may be helpful, if its still active... Dan Koehl (talk) 11:38, 15 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, was lazy, after checking the Deletion logs I saw the edits. Dan Koehl (talk) 11:41, 15 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Dan: To be precise I wrote "None of them have made any edits until now" and yes, those edits I've deleted. :-) This includes the "AldaHoskins" account created in October last year, with zero edits until yesterday when suddenly they created 8 new spam pages. TheGoodIndian

I would appreciate an independent review of my pecautionary block of User:TheGoodIndian.

I noticed yesterday that they had added several vernacular names which appeared to be incorrect. In partucular the last one they added translates (according to Google) as "India is at risk". Given the heightened political tensions in India at the moment, an immediate block and revert seemed prudent. TheGoodIndian has now questioned the block on my en.Wikipedia talk page. I have advised the that they can still edit their talk page on his project. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:32, 2 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Since you're soliciting the feedback:
  • A block seems appropriate, since there was clearly some editing that was inappropriate.
  • Indefinite is not what I would have chosen, since he could easily get the message after a few days or whatever.
  • I would recommend posting to his talk page explaining what you wrote here. An indefinite block with no post to talk (other than the welcome message) seems unhelpful.
  • I disagree with your reasoning as "vandalism-only", when edits like this are not obviously vandalism. They may be incorrect (I don't know anything about Bengali) but it's not obviously trolling or soapboxing or something. "Inserting False Information" would be accurate and appropriate.
As a recommendation, I would invite you to post to his talk and ask what's up and why he's here on Wikispecies, etc. I think the outcome of this indefinite block with no message will be that he leaves the site for good, whereas a little bit of effort to call-in a user who is not entirely a vandal could pay off with someone providing much-needed info in Bengali. I personally would love for him to help translate. Broadly speaking, I think you are as always generally well-intentioned, competent, helpful, and somewhat... brusque? short-tempered? impatient? when interacting with a user with whom you have a conflict but I very much appreciate you having the humility and maturity to ask for feedback: it's a lesson I definitely need to learn in self-reflection and awareness. @Pigsonthewing:Justin (koavf)TCM 22:48, 2 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Dealing with your points in order:
  • Indefinite does not mean "infinite", it means "until the issue is resolved". We should use indef. blocks more, not less. Generally speaking, fixed-term block allows a mal-intentioned editor to bide their time then resume harmful actions.
  • Good point. I will post a note on the user's talk page linking to this discussion, rather than repeat it.
  • I was torn between "persistent vandalism" and "vandalism only" as the only two near-suitable pre-sets. I should have used "other".
I have no prior conflict (nor any interaction that I recall) with TheGoodIndian

Thank you all for bringing this up – it may be handy in the case of future, similar incidents. In the broader scope of things, I've long thought that the terms "Persistent Vandalism" and "Vandalism-Only Account" are too limiting and/or misleading. How about we simply merge them into a single reason "Vandalism"? Or at least change "Persistent Vandalism" to "Vandalism" (keeping "Vandalism-Only Account" intact)? –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 13:55, 3 March 2020 (UTC).[reply]
I think "Vandalism" is enough: why define it as "vandalism-only" when very few vandals are literally only doing vandalism? It just states and implies something that's not true. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:19, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

───────────────────────── Earlier today the user added a request on their user talk page to get their user account unblocked. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 15:00, 6 March 2020 (UTC).[reply]

Following an explanation posted to my talk page on en.Wikipedia, and subsequently copied to the above talk page, I'm happy to have unblocked. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:27, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, sounds good @Andy. In the meantime (and with a ping to @Justin) I've pruned the blocking reasons by replacing the "Persistent vandalism" and "Vandalism-only Account" reasons with the more straightforward "Vandalism" item. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 09:04, 10 March 2020 (UTC).[reply]

No issue with something on this but the giraffe in question was an albino not a species in its own right. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 22:15, 16 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

───────────────────────── @Scott: True, so from a taxonomical viewpoint two albino specimens being killed in Kenya is a fairly unexciting event. I chose to mention it on Twitter anyway, since a tweet may direct new readers to Wikispecies and as long as it doesn't involve pure clickbait that's of course a good thing.

Talking about taxonomy: in the article they list the taxon as Giraffa reticulata which is presented on Wikispecies as the subspecies Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata. Wikimedia Commons offer +300 different images of that particular taxon (most in subcategories), however as far as I could see none of them depicts an albino specimen. Again that's not really an issue for Wikispecies either, since we normally wouldn't add a picture of any albinistic, amelanoid, (hypo/hyper)melanistic or leucistic specimens anyway. It would be a welcome addition to Commons though, for use on Wikipedia. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 02:04, 17 March 2020 (UTC).[reply]

@Tommy:. Yes I agreed with mentioning it somehow, but I did not want to see a page created for them, since we already have one for their species. A page for them is more a Wikipedia item than ours, though that would be their decision. Absolutely if appropriately licenced images of these animals can be added to commons would certainly be worthwhile for use on a number of pages on Wikipedia, or even Wikiversity. Wikispecies:Nospam predates the addition of creation protection. Can I suggest that the titles listed on it, if they still should be protected from creation, be replaced with creation protection? --DannyS712 (talk) 10:57, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@DannyS712: Sorry if I'm just dumb here but what's the problem? I trust your instincts because you have good judgement. —Justin (koavf)TCM 04:26, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Since 2007 (phab:T4919) there has been a proper way to protect pages against creation using the normal protection interface. Using proper creation protection means that the pages show up as protected from creation, rather than protected from editing. --DannyS712 (talk) 05:27, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@DannyS712: Still struggling some here. The Nospam page works and is faster than clicking on 54 pages and opening up their protection and amending it and then deleting the Nospam page. Is there a problem with this quicker solution? Sorry if this comes across as me being dense or snippy--I didn't get much sleep last nite. Just trying to understand. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:47, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Not dense at all - the no spam page works, it just means that the pages aren't registered as being protected against creation, and since it looks like some of those pages may not need creation protection anymore because the vandals targetting them are from a decade ago, it may not require 54 pages to be opened. If not, its fine, just wanted to make a suggestion --DannyS712 (talk) 22:25, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yes am aware, fortunately this was a test page and not impossible for me, I am not a translation admin, I could not have deleted this if it was a full page. Need help from an admin

I tried to create Template:Species-2020-07 as a redirect to template:Species-2020-05 because that seems to be the most recent species template to exist, so I could remove the redlink on the main page. However, I cannot create it as I am not an admin, and that's apparently required if a page is linked to the Main page. So, there are two solutions: (a) make me an admin and I'll do it, or (b) have an admin do it. Since option (a) will definitely never happen, I'm requesting option (b)... @Estopedist1: I don't object but do you have any idea of what you would do with the tool? —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:39, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Koavf:, well usually I try to be as succinct as possible, but in this case I have to explain in more detail. Sorry for "info pollution". Some examples:
  1. if Foo category/template is gonna be deleted/modified (eg Category:Articles containing Japanese-language text) it is very laborous to remove it manually;
  2. correcting links from DAB pages using "Enable disambiguate" function. Very useful because I am working a lot with DAB pages;
  3. old user's (before about 2009) contributions which format is invalid, eg see "What links here" and headword "main page". Very effective is skip-function, because some old articles are already wikified;
  4. using append-function to add eg category or other structure at the end of article;

yes he also tried to comment on Dan's recent RfA at Wikidata. It was deleted as it was after closing. I will leave it to others to discuss this then decide what to do as a CU. Stephen, if you're reading this, please just stop. It's embarrassing that someone half your age has to explain this to you but your behavior is inappropriate and your presence here is unwelcome. You have had many opportunities to be a constructive member of the community and you have refused, so it's time to just let it go. Do something else with your time on this Earth. If, as you've repeatedly said, this is project is a failure and you've been oppressed, why do you want to spend any time here? I'm sure you can manage some more constructive use of your time and knowledge. I can say with complete sincerity please go away and have a nice life. —Justin (koavf)TCM 01:28, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

To be honest and fair, I have not noticed that Stephen has vandalized Wikidata, can someone give a diff, which shows bad edits on WD? Wikidata is pretty different from other projects, you open a window and submit a post, not much to discuss. But of course, if by purpose, you submit wrong info, you may create a large deal of damage. Has Thorpe really done that? Dan Koehl (talk) 19:54, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
on brief scan his edits on Wikidata seemed reasonable hence I did not call any of them into question, excep this late edt of your RfA which was only an issue because it was late. He is however globally banned for socks and hence this appearance as a new sock is a problem. Only reason I put the info there. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 20:35, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Stephen Thorpe

I would, in spite of the comment on mys recent RfA at Wikidata, still rise the question, if the WS community would accept a dialogue with Stephen? Some years went by, and who knows, if he is prepared to change his mind? Being a very problematic user, he was also very productive? IF, in the best of worlds, he would be prepared to follow WS rules, and accept consensus within the community, would anyone be will to give him a chance? Dan Koehl (talk) 16:30, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • I am a quite recent Wikispecies contributor, and I am not aware of what were the issues but I see his name in a lot of page histories, it looks like he was a prolific contributor. Personaly. As an experimented user of the Wikimedia projects, I have several hundred thousand contributions to my credit and I'm administrator in Commons, I am always sad when we are forced to banish involved contributors, and I will always be willing to give a second chance. So yes I would say ok for a second chance. That being said the more experienced Wikispecies community is more able to decide based on past experience with this user. Christian Ferrer (talk) 17:24, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Naive optimist that I am, yes. But I don't know how that would work and I am certain that it won't be a matter of me reaching out to him. (Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.) I am very much appreciative of a lot of Stephen's work but 1.) quite a bit of it was out-of-scope and 2.) he refused over and over again to play well with others. If he is willing to actually stick to our guidelines and not rage out on others, then of course, I would be happy to have him back. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:12, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • I personally have no issue with it. I happen to know him from my work with the ICZN. However, I am also aware that there has been serious opposition to him being allowed back by the community in the past. So I am hesitant to discuss this with him without community consultation. That would have to include editors who are not admins who are well aware of Stephen's past. Unfortunately he is very capable of being a great contributor, but he does not play well with others in the past, hence his ban at Meta, EN WP and here. He has quite a record at the CU site as you know Dan and Justin. Personally I would welcome him back on conditions, he and I have our differences of opinion but I do consider him a colleague. I certainly respect many of his views on nomenclature and have even gone to him for second opinions in my own research. However, we are a community and that has to come first. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 20:41, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • I too am bit of an optimist, but in this case with misgivings being a recipient of both his anger and attempts to impose his non-consensual vision for WS. I would also caution allowing him back on here without consulting admins and crats on other wikis - he is after all globally blocked and many of these blocks were first implemented prior to a global. For WS to act unilaterally may provoke strong reactions and cause unwanted adverse reactions elsewhere on WP. Of course we will need a Pump discussion and a vote as well. sorry for cluttering this category. I just mention that with en:Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser this mass-deletion probably takes some minutes. But, of course, you can check every invalid or out-of-scope Phytotaxa template one by one--Estopedist1 (talk) 14:01, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Don't know what is the best - get rid of them and recreate if needed or assess one by one! Thoughts? Andyboorman (talk) 14:22, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There is no need to be in such a hurry to eliminate all of these templates. In addition, some Zts marked for elimination as "out of scope" (as example {{Zt3406.67}}) are not out of scope, they just need some adjustments. Burmeister (talk) 14:29, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Estopedist1: and @Neferkheperre:. I'm noted that several ZT template about "erratum" are marked for delete, and were contested. Someone is opposed to reversing the markup to delete, as they are not out of scope. Since they need to be checked individually for permanence and corrections, it would be interesting to have more time to work on them, and the markings only fill the Category: Candidates for speedy deletion unnecessarily. Regards, Burmeister (talk) 16:59, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
if errata is related to Wikispecies content, then fix it in Wikispecies and the Zt-template in question can be deleted. Template GBIF

Could somebody with greater coding experience than me have a look at Template GBIF and enable it to look and function more like Template IPNI? My feeble efforts are on Micrantheum. I have unprotected the template, so if this needs to go back on then feel free. I got a request by Orchi on my talk page, but instinctive coding experience is not in my skills set. Thanks in anticipation. Andyboorman (talk) 07:21, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It may be necessary to have a discussion for the standardization of the template before modifying it, since we have two templates for the same site ({{GBIF}} and {{GBIFID}}), with different formats. And GBIF is not the only template with this "problem", maybe a more wide discussion on VillagePump is necessary. Regards, Burmeister (talk) 12:10, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Can you contact the person running the bot and explain the problem? Andyboorman (talk) 19:41, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I left a note on the bot's talk page. There was no talk page or user page disclosing who the operator is DannyS712 (talk) 19:44, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
See https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anv%C3%A4ndare:Lsjbot likely operated by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:CentralAuth/Lsj. Christian Ferrer (talk) 19:54, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have indef blocked the bot (which had made further edits) as unauthorised; with no prejudice to unblocking after a successful bot approval request. I note that User:Lsj has only made four edits on this project, none unrelated to the bot, and all in 2012. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:36, 3 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Lsjbot has not to my knowledge ever done any editing on Wikispecies, nor do I intend it to do so. And the list of contributions linked to above appears empty. The bot reads Wikispecies when working on species articles on cebwiki, but there should be no edits. I don't understand what is going on. What offending edits has the bot done? Lsj (talk) 14:40, 3 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If the list is empty, it's very likely because the edit(s) have been deleted. Christian Ferrer (talk) 16:09, 3 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You can see the page creations at Special:Log/Lsjbot. --DannyS712 (talk) 17:16, 3 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting, the bot created Argentina (isda) here after it has operated a sitelink move in Wikidata with the same text, and operated a page move under that name in ceb.wikipedia. Christian Ferrer (talk) 20:37, 3 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Lsj: That you operate a bot that is editing without your knowldge is even more troubling. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:48, 3 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I found the problem in the bot code. These edits were supposed to go onto cebwiki, where the bot was indeed running with my knowledge, and where I was monitoring it. The bot was logged in also to Wikispecies, but for reading purposes only, so I saw no reason to monitor that. I did what I thought was a small change to the code yesterday to cover some rare special cases. Unfortunately, that small change introduced a bug causing the bot to save a small minority of edits to the wrong site. The bug is fixed now. Sorry for causing you trouble, and thank you for spotting the error. Lsj (talk) 22:16, 3 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Lsj: and others: well done, well spotting, mates! And the power of patrolling mechanism to easily see pecularities. Just a sidenotice: in order to cover millions of species (and maybe even higher taxa) articles in future, we definitely need helping by bots--Estopedist1 (talk) 04:44, 4 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Stephen sockpuppet?

We haven't had one in a while (well, none that I know of: I don't really keep tabs on it), but it's been pointed out to me that this "new" guy's style is kinda eerily similar. While I would have no qualms blocking Stephen, I'd like a quick sanity check (I'm asking that a lot recently...) before I do so. The message left on Estopedist1's talk page seems especially suspicious to me from a "brand new" user! Circeus (talk) 15:52, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The name chosen is offensive to many people and that is in itself a reason for a block/deletion. I tend to agree that this is a sock disagreeing with the removal of his template project. Andyboorman (talk) 16:24, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
On further thought, the inability to use indentation should have also clued me in. Circeus (talk) 16:24, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Circeus, hi! I'm here from an enwiki sockpuppet investigation - is "Stephen" the person referred to in this investigation? GeneralNotability (talk) 20:32, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@GeneralNotability: Yes, that's our Stephen. The "stho" is for "Stephen Thorpe". What happened? Did he escalate this up to meta-wiki? Circeus (talk) 21:41, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Circeus: he didn't show up at meta-wiki, but they showed up at enwiki and Pigsonthewing asked for them to be blocked as a sock (since several of his socks are blocked there too), I wanted to double-check his identity before blocking. GeneralNotability (talk) 22:10, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As I noted on Estopedist1's talk page, Stephen's never been that good at not looking like Stephen. This has a lot of Stephen hallmarks on en: too (although I cannot even fathom to understand wtf he's trying to argue on en:template talk:Doi) Circeus (talk) 22:25, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Overwriting plus generally about disambiguation pages

Sweet (disambiguation) -- > Sweet--Estopedist1 (talk) 11:50, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Note: I created the disambiguation page under this title because almost all links to Sweet are referring to Robert Sweet. Maybe the links to Sweet should be disambiguated. Korg (talk) 11:29, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Korg: we always do the disambiguation page, if there are at least two authors with the same surname--Estopedist1 (talk) 12:43, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Estopedist1: I don't disagree. Sometimes there are special cases, where (almost) all links are referring to a taxon authority. For convenience, I chose to create the disambiguation page with a temporary name, but of course it could be moved. Another big task would be to correct all links pointing to disambiguation pages (Wikispecies:Disambiguation pages with links). Korg (talk) 13:16, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Korg: even if 95% links is related to one person, I strongly suggest to do disambiguation page, because
  1. all our links must be like {{a|Charles Robert Darwin|Darwin}}, not barely {{a|Darwin}}
  2. when using disambiguation page system, we automatically see these errors and some Wikipedias even mark them in different colour, see eg Hungarian Wikipedia;
  3. all long discussions will end immediately when using this easy system;
  4. yes, we have over 100k such links pointing to the disambiguation pages (Wikispecies:Disambiguation pages with links). But step-by-step we will correct them.--Estopedist1 (talk) 16:57, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
one of the hardest question for me is, what to do when taxon and taxon authority have the same name. WS is taxon-focused, then probably almost all cases we maybe should use the system: reserving to the taxon and creating the disambiguation page "LEMMA (authorities)"--Estopedist1 (talk) 16:57, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Some templates to delete (?)

I recently made two new templates for volumes of Biologia Centrali-Americana ({{Jacoby, 1880–1892}} and {{Jacoby, 1880–1892a}}) that makes these existing four templates redundant, since they only cover specific page ranges of these volumes. So I'm requesting they be deleted, if there is no objection. Normally I would add {{Delete}} to put these up for speedy deletion, but I feel in this case there may possibly be differing opinions on how to deal with them (and in case anyone thinks it's better to have reference templates for a single year only or something?). I suppose they could be made into redirects, but on the other hand deleting them could free up the template names to use for other publications by the same author. Monster Iestyn (talk) 03:20, 21 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Since Jacoby wrote both entire volumes, referencing parts separately is not necessary. If it were a collaboration, then separate those parts according to individual contributions. Neferkheperre (talk) 14:57, 21 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that makes sense to me. Though, those four templates were originally created because some articles that cite the volumes gave only pages for a certain year. Monster Iestyn (talk) 17:27, 21 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
